Non-vaccinated athletes will be required to complete a 21-day hard quarantine ahead of February’s Winter Games in Beijing as local organisers unveiled aThe International Olympic Committee , the International Paralympic Committee and the Beijing organising committee revealed the first editions of the athlete playbooks overnight on Tuesday, with a heavy focus on vaccination and significant roadblocks in place for those who have not had their jabs.
Once inside the loop, athletes will be subject to daily COVID tests and health monitoring via an app and will only allowed to be permitted to move between approved destinations. That will mean no contact with the general public, although there will be some local fans in the stands, unlike Tokyo which banned spectators completely.
“Vaccines are proven to reduce infection with, and transmission of, COVID-19 and are a key tool in enabling activities to be carried out safely,” the playbook said. “It will be mandatory to be fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to departure for China, in order to be allowed in the closed loop system without quarantine.”
