Australia’s offshore wind resources could produce more than 2000 gigawatts of power, far exceeding the country’s entire electricity generation.

With its onshore cousin already Australia’s largest source of renewable power generation, the nascent offshore wind sector could power the next wave of growth in clean electricity after regulatory restrictions were removed and as production costs for the technology fall.

Nearly 20 projects worth billions of dollars of investment have already been announced that could comprise 2300 GW by the end of the decade. They could also generate thousands of jobs in regional areas such as NSW’s Newcastle and the Illawarra, areas that are most vulnerable to job losses in the coal mining and baseload power sectors.

Some say coal generators could close earlier as the sector comes under increasing economic pressure from cheap renewables., as the rapid uptake of solar pushed renewable energy sources to nearly a third of all electricity produced on the main grid. With the closure of coal power seemingly inevitable, thousands of jobs are expected to be lost. But offshore wind developers say their projects will cushion the economic impact.

The Electrical Trades Union and Maritime Union of Australia have been pushing for more than two years for a legislative structure to be put in place for the offshore wind sector.Although Australia has now put through the legislation to permit offshore wind, further regulatory clarity is needed. The federal government must still determine the locations in which it will allow turbines offshore and how developers can go about securing licences to build projects.

, which has proposed a 1000 megawatt project off Tasmania that is expected to cost $2 billion. “That is a hard thing to put in your onshore environment. As well as being bigger, offshore wind farms also typically have higher available capacity because of more consistently windy weather off the coast, making their output well suited to support heavy industry.
