For China's formal application to join the TPP trade deal to be successful, it will need unanimous support from all current members of the regional pact.

Trade Minister Dan Tehan says Australia will oppose China's bid to join a key trade pact until it halts trade strikes against Australian exports and resumes minister-to-minister contacts with the Morrison government.

China on Thursday formally applied to join the world's biggest trading agreement - the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership .The CPTPP was signed by 11 countries including Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan and New Zealand in 2018. Mr Tehan said China could not join until it convinced members of its "track record of compliance" with existing trade agreements and Word Trade Organisation commitments.

That was a process that would require Beijing to resume high-level dialogue with Australia, he told the Weekend Australian.Australia has lodged disputes against China in the WTO on restrictions on exports of barley and wine imposed by Beijing. "CPTPP parties would also want to be confident that an accession candidate would fully implement its commitments under the agreement in good faith," Mr Tehan said.Share

China formally applies to join trade deal alongside Australia that Trump dumpedShortly after condemning Australia, the US and the UK for forming AUKUS, China applied to join the trans-pacific trade deal established to isolate Beijing. Western media has been cursing China in different ways for nearly half a century, but China has become increasingly powerful, developed, civilized and wealthy at an alarming rate. Also China learned a lot from dealing with western countries. 'Now who left a big smelly Pooh right there?' asked Kanga. “It’s extremely difficult, if not impossible, to see how they could embrace the CPTPP rules governing state-owned enterprises, labor, e-commerce, the free flow of data, among others, as well as comprehensive market access commitments,”

This pact ties Australia to any US military engagement against ChinaIt amounts to dramatic loss of sovereignty, writes the former Australian prime minister. A really dumb move. But what would you expect? Morrison has made it his goal to put us at loggerheads with China since he became PM. Best Prime Minister in my lifetime. But can’t agree with his anti-US, pro-China stance, even though some of the points are valid Australia is tied to any US engagement and Paul Keating knows this.
