What's so special about nuclear-powered subs?

That deal was to build 12 diesel-electric submarines and was reaffirmed in person by Morrison to French President Emmanuel Macron just two months ago, despite having alreadyScrapping that deal could cost taxpayers $400 million and anger Macron. Naval Group said it had no comment when contacted.Peter Jennings, executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, backed the new deal and said his initial response was "surprise".

"I would say in past years the US would never have opened the doors to their nuclear technology to a country like Australia, so this reflects a big change. And as Joe Biden said, frankly, it's all about China. So, America's first expectation of Australia is that we will do more heavy lifting of our own."Alex Ellinghausen

As far as this provoking a response from China, Mr Jennings said China's actions are the reason for this deal.
