The Grattan Institute says the long-held dream of linking major cities from Melbourne to Brisbane via rail will fail to deliver proposed economic, travel and environmental benefits.

Australia should put the idea of an east-coast bullet train to rest and "move on”, as the long-held dream of linking major cities from Melbourne to Brisbane via rail will fail to deliver its proposed economic, travel and environmental benefits.

The federal government is promising to build its own fast rail network in Victoria, NSW and Queensland and has provided $8 million to a private consortiumChina leads the world in developing an extensive high-speed train network, with more than 30,000 kilometres. But the Grattan Institute's head of the cities and transport program Marion Terrill said the government should stop using public money to continually study these proposals.

But claims they will take pressure off crowded capital cities while at the same time boosting struggling regions are "overblown". The analysis also warned that once a bullet train was up and running, it would emit far less than today’s planes, but construction would take nearly 50 years and be enormously emissions intensive.

It provided funding to the Consolidated Land and Rail Australia company, which proposed to build two inland cities in Victoria and a further six in New South Wales that are linked by high-speed rail lines between Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. “In doing so, it can allow people to live in those regional centres and have the cheaper housing and lifestyle associated with that, while still being able to easily access the big city employment centres on a convenient and affordable basis.”Federal opposition transport, infrastructure and regional development spokeswoman Catherine King reiterated that Labor was a firm supporter of rail - “whether that be urban, regional, freight or high speed”.

The Grattan Institute need to rethink this study around how coronavirus is going to change everything. Tall building office districts are going to be ghost towns for some time due to social distancing problems with lifts and public transport. We need to escape the cities.

We'll need it for sure in the future, build it so it's ready for when we will need it, instead of being too late, as always.

It isn't just about the capital cities, it would allow the country towns to grow, remove population from overcrowded cities. It would leave a last legacy for generations to come for when Australia does have a larger population

Allow Another 100 Million People and then lots of things become VIABLE. China Indonesia India Bangladesh and half the country’s in Africa wouldn’t miss 100 million I’m sure there would be 100 Million Europeans too

Gratton Institute ?. They said East West Link is not needed in Melbourne as well. Must be good state labor grants I reckon.

Zzzzz as Australia continues to fall further behind the rest of the world. Soon it will become like Cuba, full of gas guzzling relics, only it is too many flights away for anyone to be bothered to visit. Meanwhile the UK is busy investing in HS2 and electric cars.

Poor AlboMP is not getting what he called his great idea - again

If we had built a high speed network some decades ago we would be seeing the benefit now. A huge number of people perfer to travel point to point over flying. Trians from Syd to Mel shouldnt take 12 hours in 2020

Retail's new malaise: What happens when the lights are switched back onThere are fears that the end of government relief packages such as JobKeeper and the winding down of loan repayment moratoriums by the banks, likely in September, will pitch more and more businesses into insolvency Since it is likely that the government won't bring people through, what is to be done instead. The decisions for lockdowns were based on flawed modeling and worst case scenarios. Scared the population to behave irrationally. Some still scared of their own shadow.

First cohort of prisoners to move into Australia's largest jail from JulyThe $700 million Clarence Correctional Centre at Lavadia, south of Grafton, will house up to 1,700 inmates at full capacity. Enough room there for all the people who dont go along with big brother and the Chicoms. Building on Macquarie Island would still have been a far cheaper and more effective proposition. Certainly no recidivist activity from those coming out .

Wuhan lab head calls virus leak claims 'pure fabrication'Claims promoted by the Trump administration that the global coronavirus pandemic originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in the central Chinese city are a 'pure fabrication,' the institute's director said. Ok so they accepted the virus was in the lab but not leaked .. maybe someone got infected from the lab then. Then why a simple request by Australian government for an independent investigation is being hostilely pushed back? The US knows its a pure fabrication too because the US commissioned and financed the coronavirus research in the Wuhan lab, as exposed by Newsweek. Their MO is to outsource their GAIN OF FUNCTION research out around the world, which was banned prior to 2017.. Convienient...

Ambassador says US has 'absolute confidence' in Australia after Mike Pompeo warns of 'disconnect'The US ambassador to Australia says the US has 'absolute confidence' in Australia's ability to protect the security of its telecommunications networks and those of its intelligence partners. We can only hope. Oh course they do. It was America that was caught tapping into the undersea internet communications off New Zealand a few yrs back & spying on Australians at the government's behest because if they did it that would be illegal 🙄 australia & the US know quite a bit about it, considering both nations have been hacking and spying on other nations & their own citizens for ages.
