Exclusive: Australia lacks the facilities and know-how to make its own pandemic vaccines, a report warns, raising fears we may have to wait years for another country to supply us with a COVID-19 vaccine

Australia lacks the facilities and know-how to make its own pandemic vaccines, a report to governmentto supply us with a COVID-19 vaccineDr Craig Rayner, the lead author of a report prepared for the Defence Department three years ago, said it should have been a wake-up call for Australia toCSL grows the influenza virus in chicken eggs before using it to produce flu vaccine.

Dr Rayner’s report, commissioned by the Department of Defence’s Science and Technology agency, analysed Australia’s ability to develop "medical countermeasures" – vaccines and drugs – for threats including pandemics, radiation and chemical and bioweapons.experts who could take a drug from discovery through to a finished product, and"The way I looked at it is, we have A- or B-class components, with D-class wiring,” said Dr Rayner.

The report called for Australia to urgently establish a national medical countermeasures initiative – a public-private organisation to work on vaccines and drugs. The US has, which is already deeply involved in co-ordinating government and private strategies to manufacture a vaccine. "It is a little naive to think because the US is doing a lot of the vaccine development, that they are going to put us right at the front of the queue," said Dr Rayner, a former executive at pharma companies Roche and CSL and now president of integrated drug development at Certara.Scientists hope to develop a COVID-19 vaccine within the next 12 to 18 months. But the world then faces the mammoth task of making and distributing 7 billion to 14 billion vials of the drug.

Another essential where outsourcing and defunding has come back to bite us on the bum!

Well MAYBE if the LNP restored the funding to the CSIRO? We might have a chance.

As usual..nothing else to right!...idiot!

MdmAbsentMinded If you’ve got it, use it ! If you don’t have it, get it !!

I don’t think Australia lacks the knowhow or capability, we lack the capacity due to years of gross underfunding in this space especially of CSIRO More funding including investment in manufacturing please!

From virus gene sequence to candidate vaccine antigens synthesised within days, should have been a major international project for years, comparable in scale to the astrophysics mega projects now found around the world.

WTF? Are we a third world nation? China seems to be able to do it!

just leave it up to business , we're too busy busting unions , press freedom , whistleblowers ; to cover our asses !

True

After pandering to Washington for so long I sure hope Scomo had a deal lined up with the USA for vaccines. Else we will come out of this inquiry fiasco looking like idiots.

What a positive uplifting story. NOT! Journalist are beginning to be a joke with the bullshit they think people are interested in reading.

Shouldn’t have cut funding to the CSIRO

Good - They can fuck vaccines off this island.

Australia has been stripped of the capacity to make most things.

SMH pro-China, anti-Australian.. sad

O-oh, who's been defunding the CSIRO?

If anyone on this planet will invent a vaccine .. it’s the Aussies .. you’ll see

When being the 'lucky country' doesn't payoff!!

After all the budget cuts in the last 7 years this is were we are at now. Explains why the federal government could not supply testing kits for so long and then had to wait for someone else to step in as the government was unable to supply?

Like many other countries, priorities were placed elsewhere. Australia has many other facilities that others envy. This pandemic will hopefully teach us all to not put all of our eggs in one basket

Then bloody well start fixing the problem just don't tell us.

Ingrediants is all here..nasty

Don’t worry Gates will happily fly in and jab us all with his drugs...problem reaction solution...ya all fall for it every time..thanks SMH for playing your part..suckers

We also lack intelligent political leadership.

So much for innovation turnbull ... auspol

Don't write crap.

Communist China can help with vaccines but Aussies must bow, swear allegiance & absolute obedience. Will Australians kowtow to Communist China & Asia Pacific Overlord wannabe - Emperor Xi JinPing?

This is a word wide collaboration.....not Australia exclusive..... Stop reporting crap

More fear journalism

What garbage, you mean the US forbids Australia from, releasing a vaccine without American pharmaceuticals!!!

Community health has never been taken seriously. All the money is in providing services for rich minority customers. Sexy treatments and prolonging lifetimes of suffering.

But Morrison says Australia is a world leader in insert noun here. But remember he's only lying when he knows the facts are different.

The US will supply, in exchange for a military base lease or a large sum of money.

According to US research report, CHINA are most likely to mass-produce the vaccine, so does this administration still policitising the virus and poke china ?

🤔 yeah nah. That’s wrong. You’ll see....

Well look what the war on science has wrought. Fan-bloody-tastic.

Atleast we're leading the world in social justice and climate crisis protests.

Or we could totally reject the pharma-industrial complex by opposing their lucre driven surrogates (politicians, doctors & mainstream media) who punt their toxic junk

You can thank Tony ‘I don’t need a Science Minister, but let’s cut funding to the CSIRO’ Abbottfor that.

Yeah, we get it. We suck!
