Australia Day events begin around the country, with ceremonies in Sydney celebrating the oldest living culture in the world and acknowledging January 26 is a 'sombre' day for many.

The WugulOra Morning Ceremony was held at Gudjyi , a place where Eora women once paddled their canoes to catch fish and collect shellfish.

She drew comparisons to the 1789 smallpox epidemic which killed significant numbers of Indigenous people. Celebrations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture will be held across the country, including the Yabun Festival in Sydney, as well as multiple protests. Another Captain Cook statue in Edinburgh Gardens, in the inner north Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy North, was also covered in red paint overnight. In Central Victoria, hundreds gathered by Lake Wendouree for Ballarat's third annual Survival Day dawn service which aims to recognise the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

"I'm hopeful by the time my children grow up, and are having those conversations, they're picking up a different chapter of that story." "I think the issues that we face as a country are so great, we need to focus on those [first],” she said.Kaurna elders hosted a traditional smoking ceremony on the banks of the River Torrens.

Clearly 26 Jan is not fit for purpose, Time to pick a date that unifies, 27 May is the day in 1967 that Australians voted so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were counted in the population and the Commonwealth could make laws for them - seems a perfect symbol of unity

Beautiful.

Idea: Reset Australia Day to a floating day. The last Monday in January. Celebrate Matthew Finders and First Nations crewman Bungaree in the first circumnavigation of the continent. Celebrate Flinders naming the country 'Australia' on his chart of the coastline. Simple. Historic.

Happy Australia Day

Good read but the title of this article.. seriously? 🤦🏻‍♀️

Very hot weather today

The European went all over the world interfered in other people's development...

“Why do we celebrate Australia Day?” …today’s day would be offensive to the true custodians of this land and my heart goes out to them. Imagine the Turkish community in Australia throwing parties during Anzac Commemorations (whilst the diggers are at memorial service).

Change the bloody DATE.

Please change the day..... If we are truely to be an inclusive nation.

Happy Australia Day🇦🇺🙂

'One mob' Not a very nice way to describe how we feel about being united. It's going backwards being referred to in this way.

not good enough, why 365 days only this day highlights indigenous tradition and stress people to unite as this date is controversial- an invasion day

We are one mob just some don’t think we are !

Mob: disorderly and/or violent crowd, criminal organisation. Thanks but nah, I would much prefer a nation working towards surviving the 21st century.

Australia Day is Civilization Day! it is the day we lifted the poor starving locals into the modern world, we gave them medicine, real food, housing, clothing, money, education, a language that wasn't just incoherent, we even gave them a flag, and made up a history for them.

We need a Republic Day - First Monday in February. Celebrate a united, independent country rather than a particular date 👍

The economic case for a guaranteed Australia Day long weekendLet’s focus on the economics for just a moment and consider the benefits of making AustraliaDay a floating Friday at the end of January, a long weekend to bookmark the end of summer and return to work. | OPINION by Jess_Irvine Jess_Irvine End of summer is end of February. Autumn starts 1 March Jess_Irvine It's only 18 years since 26 January alalone became the public holiday. Previously it was a floating long weekend on the Monday nearest (after?) 26 January (my parents called it ANA Weekend) - let's revert to a long weekend at the end of January under any other name?

WA Police to enforce 'knucklehead rule' with mask mandate in effect for Australia DayWestern Australia Police Minister Paul Papalia said cops will be enforcing the 'knucklehead rule' on Wednesday as a mask mandate is in effect for Australia Day. Lol masks required outdoors 😂😂😂😂 doesn't get much more knucklehead than that Masks outside?! What about a 100 square metre rule? Or a 2 month circuit breaker lockdown. C’mon King Mark. Do something. Beers and popcorn are out on the east coast. This is a nudge nudge wink wink effort to encourage police violence. Defund

The answer to Australia Day is already right in front of usOpinion: The First Nations of this continent had advanced societies, an abundance of sustenance – we had peace until January 26, 1788. A decision over the future of Australia Day cannot be made without consulting the people who are most affected by it: ... 'Advanced Societies' is the Author on crack? The Aborigines were a stone age people practicing a hunter gather lifestyle. It does not mean we should not value the Aboriginal Culture, but really, stop all this BS. “We ensured we never outgrew and displaced other living things…” Well, something did.
