Our newest health official will be dealing with a problem that could claim more lives than COVID-19

Health Minister Greg Hunt said the appointment showed the Government had responded to the calls for action."Somebody who can listen to the concerns of the community and continue to give good advice and good ideas to the Government."

Before that, she spent many years working as a consultant psychiatrist specialising in forensic mental health.Professor Murphy told a parliamentary committee Professor Vine would work alongside National Mental Health Commission CEO Christine Morgan, bringing a clinical perspective to the work. "There was a view we needed to cover the full spectrum and have a strong psychiatric input, as well as the broader mental health spectrum Christine Morgan provides."Professor Hickie, from the Brain and Mind Centre, said the appointment showed the Government was strengthening its commitment to mental health, but added Professor Vine had a difficult task ahead of her.

"It gives real meat to the Minister's statement that lives lost to suicide and mental health matter as much as lives lost to physical health.

GOOD MORNING AUSTRALIA......some are just waking up. Even before plan-demic drama started, on average, there were around 8 suicide deaths DAILY, mostly comprise of young adult. However, cv19 merely killed 98 in more than 2 months, all older individuals. So, NO real surprise!

Of course it will. A 4% increase in annual suicide rate will outstrip covid deaths to date.

No question that self harm will rocket. Our government has managed to ignore the plight of 900,000 citizens. Their lives are miserable and hard. Now they feign concern Yeah....Nah.

people commit suicide for many and varied reasons, there's not always a history or mental illness or trauma, it can be the fear of having no security in their life, the government has to provide affordable housing, and not expect a doctor to perform miracles

We live in a society with an unforgiving economic structure, you just need one variable to change and you could find yourself pushed to that dark place, especially if you don't own your own home or have a job, its not fair to place it all on psychiatry...

So you mean we don’t live in a Covid19 vacuum? Quarantining healthy people increases their chance of poor health outcomes? Nice that they pretend to care now?

why is it mental health has to be government? pay their own We have been too reliant on gov fund

Our experience in the taxi industry is Govts don't care about mental stress faced by small business, their staff & families. There is no help available from Govt agencies & nobody cares even though taxis have worked to assist the vulnerable elderly & disabled during this crisis!
