Australia will “look to fill” any gap in the gas market in Europe should Russia threaten to hold off supply amidst tensions around Ukraine.

Europe relies on Russia to supply about 40 per cent of its natural gas with Germany even more dependent, leading to supply concerns should the tap turn off.

“We will of course continue to meet our existing contracts, but where there’s a shortfall Australia will always look to support our friends. Mr Pitt said it would “certainly impact” Russia’s economy as it would Australia’s, while senior Biden administration officials also warned of the harsh effects blocking LNG supply would have.

Another administration official said the US was looking overseas to secure a “significant majority of the potential shortfall” in Europe’s energy supply. It comes as Russia continues to amass thousands of troops on Ukraine’s eastern border as tensions in Europe continue to grow.
