The Australian government is now actively considering the possibility of taking action against China via the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Australian government is now actively considering the possibility of taking action against China via the World Trade Organisation . Tensions with China have escalated over the ongoing barley dispute and another flashpoint emerged over the weekend after Beijing slapped tariffs of up to 200 per cent on Australian wine.

Trade and Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham made it clear he believed it would be best to resolve the issue bilaterally, but noted China’s lack of communication could force Australia to engage in negotiations through the WTO. The strike on wine is the latest in a string of actions from China targeting export industries such as seafood, coal, meat and barley.
