A website purporting to represent people from the Northern Territory who support fracking for gas in the Beetaloo Basin was registered by a former Liberal staffer in Sydney who now runs a digital marketing business.

The Beetaloo Basin is a major shale gas reserve about 500 kilometres south-east of Darwin, between Katherine and Tennant Creek. It is one of five Australian gasfields the federal government plans to open up under its “gas-led recovery” from the COVID-19 pandemic. No details are published about who is behind the website or social media accounts.

Federal Resources Minister Keith Pitt is a proponent of development of the Beetaloo Basin, saying it would create 6000 jobs in the Northern Territory. The Climate Council says fracking Beetaloo would make the Northern Territory the world’s biggest greenhouse emitter. The project is opposed by traditional owners and environmental groups, with the Climate Council finding the project would make the Northern Territory the largest per capita producer of greenhouse emissions in the world.

“The circumstantial evidence is clear this is not a genuine grassroots community group about an economic development project in the Northern Territory,” Mr Coper said. Mr Coper said the Facebook page had spent about $500 so far and reached hundreds of thousands of people. “If this is being funded by a company that stands to gain economically from fracking the Beetaloo Basin, then people should know that they’re behind it and, if it’s being funded by a political group pushing this as part of their policy, people should know who’s behind that,” he said.

plesbilongmi niltiac How good's the LNP. Fair dinkum you wouldn't trust them not to steal out of the church collection plate

niltiac An interesting note - I think this kind of thing is why the Liberals are always so extremely suspicious of real grassroots movements (see Climate 200, ‘Voices of’ groups, etc.) - the Libs do so much astroturfing that I think they can’t imagine what a real movement looks like!

niltiac Oh my god , what a brat.

niltiac FRACK POX The SMH image of the one well pad doesn't look too bad. How would you like a zillion of them! Image from Frackland Texas.

niltiac And... don't forget. It's actually about the oil.

niltiac Nick Palmer, just another Liberal CU in the NT

niltiac If you could imagine a kid who looks like a typical “Ex private school Young LNP” you’d be pretty close to that
