Inner-city residents are pushing for off-leash areas just for small dogs, as the city’s rising canine population leads to conflict between pets and their owners.
″When I asked the owner of the larger dog to control her animal, she responded with ‘She’s friendly, she’s only playing’,” he said. Mr Jewell said other small dog owners in the area had reported similar incidents, leading them to avoid the park and instead risk fines by taking their dogs elsewhere. Ms Meirelles said injuries and attacks could be avoided if smaller dogs had their own off-leash parks. However, opinion is divided on community websites about whether small dogs deserve their own off-leash areas, with some saying the onus is on owners behaving responsibly.there were 1195 dog attacks in NSW from April 1 to June 30 this year, including 656 victims that were dogs, in addition to 1206 attacks in the first three months of 2021.
“With more people out with their fur kids, there is bound to be more of a probability of these types of incidents taking place,” he said. The council has recorded 118 dog attacks, including 50 in parks, in 2020-21, compared to 145 dog attacks, with 66 in parks, in 2019-20.
_andrew 🙄
_andrew Size isn't everything. It's more temperament and or training that influences your experience at the dog park. Plus dogs are dogs not furbabies or children. This is Felix all 38kg of him playing with a 3.5mth old puppy.
_andrew This is a matter of training while a dog is still a puppy. It must be taught to socialise. I have a Labrador who wouldn't dream of attacking another dog.
_andrew In some parts of Sydney like Hurstville, we have high density living, populated by young families and barely any park space at all...not even for the children
_andrew They don't need their own park for fucks sake. They need to be socialised to be ok with being around other breeds. I take my bull mastiff to the dog park and all is well until an unsociable dog shows up. The number of times my furbaby has been bitten by small dogs is ridiculous.
_andrew We have both off-leash Dog parks and Puppy parks where I live. It is commonsense. There is no way that I would let my small Pup loose in a general dog area, and I would not allow my Rottweilers to be off-leash among small dogs. They wouldn't bite them, but they could squash them.
_andrew Pets are nice & good company, but owners responsibility to exercise their pets at their own inconvenience.

_andrew Bit off that the article was written a year ago smh SMH
_andrew I've heard they don't have this problem in Korea
_andrew In Asian and US cities off leash dog parks are usually fenced as part of a larger park. There should be no problem doing this in Australia and having separate parks for small dogs. The large open parks are a holdover from colonial days. And aggressive dogs need new owners.
_andrew A lot of the time it’s aggressive small dogs with a small dog complex trying to take it to the docile big friendly boys.
_andrew U mean the rich , selfish ways, who make the inner suburbs as NO go areas for ordinary battlers , don’t give into their demands
_andrew Get real It’s a dog eat dog world and the sooner these little dogs realise it the better
