Arborists and botanical experts acknowledge the planting of urban eucalyptus trees can cause problems, but warn the consequences of not having them could be horrendous.

Downed trees have caused widespread disruption for thousands of residents recovering from severe storms in recent weeks, fuelling renewed debate about how to better protect communities from the elements.Eucalypts are our most common trees in with up to 800 species, representing about 30 per cent of vegetationAny trees with dried-out root systems that are suddenly inundated with water are the most likely to fail, concerns around the planting of eucalyptus trees in urban areas are being voiced.

But experts have warned that, despite the hype, the risk to lives and property would be even greater if the gum trees were gone.Royal Botanic Gardens chief botanist Brett Summerell has noticed an increase in anxiety around eucalypts in recent months.that fears surrounding the damage that could be caused by falling gum trees were understandable, given the extreme weather conditions over summer.

"As much as I love them, I was starting to think a little more nervously about eucalypts. So I think it's something people are thinking about," Dr Summerell said.

Yes they're dangerous and they also damage cars with constant falling branches, twigs and sap. They're the dumbest trees to have in suburban streets.

I would like to see a study done on what trees survived the fires and floods on the east coast and then same for cyclones on the west

After 60000 some years of burning the landscape Mother Nature has adapted to cultivating a landscape that is bushfire resistant. That is why the eucalyptus and Australian native flora are in abundance.

You don’t like Koalas?

27 years ago I planted a Eucalyptus Melliodora in our suburban backyard. It is now about 20 to 25 metres tall and hosts birds, bats, possums, insects galore. It has dropped a couple of big branches, but the positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

Υες!

You've got it backwards. Our creeping suburbs are too dangerous for our eucalypts

The only problem I have in suburbia is over opinionated Eucalyptus haters. Majority were here before suburbs. Move if you don’t like them or suck it up. This is Australia.. where Eucalypts are endemic.

Ban the Eucalypts!! Finally a news outlet willing to tell the truth!

tldr, whilst trees are generally good, shallow-rooted trees can be a liability during a natural disaster. Conclusion, consider planting deep-rooted trees instead.

Nope - just the greens 🥬

Yes.

I think long term it’s too dangerous not to have them for the health of our planet and animals.

We had one in our front yard. It would drop branches constantly. I’m not talking little ones either. Apparently it is a survival tactic, but a bloody dangerous one. I think if the tree was already established before the land is sold/occupied, keep it. If not don’t plant one!!!

Yes

Absolutely! I live in the outer suburbs and I’m surrounded by the bloody Roman Candles! They should be no closer than 2km from suburban homes (and that's being generous!).

Nope

Is media to dangerous for our suburbs?

Why wouldnt our planet have its own, generic systems of defense against adverse tempuratures. Humans sweat, Dogs pant, plants wilt, antifreeze is found right across ecology. Planet has its internal and external reactions. TurnbullMalcolm is a dunce. realDonaldTrump BarackObama

Is white Anglo-pattern suburbia too dangerous for Australia? Eucalypts were here long before whitey tighties decided to live in copies of outer London. Funny that indigenous First Nations didn't seem to have too much of a problem living amongst them . . . for 30000+ years.

Not as dangerous as firebug/Lefties now are, just sad.

I think you mean aren't suburbs too dangerous for our native vegetation.

Are nonsensical news items dangerous for our brains?

Are humans too dangerous for our country
