Opinion: Amid the isolation, there can still be society, civilisation and love | tonyowright

We feel we gain strength in numbers, standing bunched together in quiet remembrance before Anzac dawns, herding excitedly to watch our footy teams, gaining a sense of belonging in workplaces, expressing our disappointment and anger together in protest marches.Separation is our new reality. Keep your distance. Wash hands but don’t shake hands when you meet.

We should expect to retreat to our homes at the hint of infection at workplaces. Many will lose their jobs.We are in the time of pandemic and nothing that went before can be the same.In Italy, that currently locked-down nation of fear we hope to avoid becoming, doctors speak of operating as if in war. Each of us is now in a sort of war against an invisible enemy; a virus slithering among us.

We might, though separated, still work together, as individuals in societies have always done in time of war and crisis. A family up the street finds itself in forced home quarantine? Phone them up. They might need someone to shop for their food and supplies. Offer to deliver to their doorstep. Maybe the waiter from a closed restaurant could do with a bit of a hand, too. Or a chat, even at a suitable distance.

tonyowright Why we are not working from home RIGHT NOW (for those that can) is beyond me.

tonyowright Yes. The footage of Italians singing their national anthem from their balconies last night gave me goosebumps. Let’s follow their lead and approach this in the same positive way they are. Unity is strength.
