A plan to turn Cockatoo Island into a major arts precinct threatens to create a significant rift within the city's artistic community

A plan to turn Cockatoo Island into a major arts precinct is threatening to create a significant rift within the city's artistic community, with former Sydney Biennale chairman Phillip Keir warning the proposal could open up the historic site to commercial development "on a mammoth scale".

"This brings us back to the inevitable conclusion that this project can only be delivered if funded by a harbourside commercial property play on a mammoth scale." "Cockatoo Island already has a long history of cultural and community activities," it reads. "It has hosted the Biennale of Sydney continuously for the last 12 years. The Cockatoo Island Foundation would be able to develop its proposal only if the government provides around $200 million to finish remediation work on the site.

"Our monies would go toward bringing arts and culture to the island ... our proposal is contingent on a feasibility study being conducted between ourselves, the Commonwealth and the state. The Sydney Biennale began using the island as a venue in 2008.

it's a dumb idea, it needs to be easily accessible, not, catch a train to circular quay, walk for 10 mins to the ferry, wait for said ferry, 15min trip while they cast off and moor, repeat to get back, yeah, nah, too much hassle

Inspired by the wall at Circular Quay.

And lose a giant casino site? We could have the world's largest lotto tube with giant coloured balls dropping 100 storeys. London has the 'eye' We could have the biggest chocolate wheel in the universe. Let's embrace our gambling heritage. It's the Australian way.

I can't imagine how much of our nation's art treasures are stored downstairs at the AGNSW but there's not much upstairs to see. Space is given to conceptual etc art instead. So dedicate a gallery on CI for all those Rees, Wakelins et als. Get our heritage out of mothballs.

The island must remain in public hands. No secret deals Mr Morrison.

Cruise terminal ....
