Albanese questions PM's China trade rhetoric | rharris334

Speaking to ABC radio on Tuesday, Mr Albanese said sending China a message from Chicago risked taking sides in the debate and it would have been better said in Australia "so there was no confusion that the Prime Minister was advancing Australia's national interest".

He welcomed a legitimate debate about World Trade Organisation rules but said China was "quite clearly still developing".China has been treated as a developing economy at United Nations climate change summits for years on the grounds it is using fossil fuels to develop in the same way Europe and North America did in the past.

"It is still an emerging economy. It is growing substantially but when you look at its population, for example, which is home to almost 1-in-4 of the world's population, it does not represent 25 per cent of the global economy," Mr Albanese said. "If you compare its per capita income with advanced economies like Australia and the United States, then it is behind those economies. Clearly China is growing, it is changing, there will be a need to consider these issues over time.

Mr Morrison avoided the harsh rhetoric of Mr Trump in recent days, saying China's economic growth was welcomed by Australia and he recognised the economic maturity that it had now realised as a newly developed economy. "This was the point of the world's economic engagement with China," he said. "Having achieved this status, it is important that China's trade arrangements, participation in addressing important global environmental challenges, with transparency in their partnerships and support for developing nations, reflect this new status and the responsibilities that go with it as a world power.
