Greater Western Sydney Giants player Haneen Zreika will not play in the club's AFL Women’s match on Friday after deciding not to wear the team’s LGBTIQ+ pride guernsey on religious grounds. The Pride Round is one of the AFLW's three dedicated events - alongside the AFLW Indigenous Round and the Good For Footy Round - that aim to foster diversity and inclusivity.
Zreika played in the club’s Pride Round last year when it was not a requirement for the players to wear a specific jersey. The 22-year-old small forward is a highly respected member of her community. She became the first Muslim player and the first player of Lebanese descent to join the Giants when she made her debut in 2019.
Wrong!!!!!!
Can we all know what's wrong in supporting LGBTQ community in her religion? Is media too scared to even talk about it? I hope one day, supporting LGBTQ doesn't remain such controversial issue. But given the political will power & media's gutless inaction, it's still very far.
Sad that Christian players couldn't get such support from team mates. Double standards in open but media is ok! Why this discrimination against LGBTQ? Why is left silent on this? Ultimately, strength wins. A particular community is strong enough to support their people wins.
This in a nutshell is all that is wrong with all religions. They all discriminate in one way or another. They preach love and tolerance and their actions show their teachings to be anything but. Just look at Morrison for a prime example of what’s wrong with religion.
Wow. This should be a time for religion to understand that we are all HUMAN BEINGS. They need to change their medieval attitudes, all of them. Excluding people because they don’t identify as man or woman, are gay or want to live their life on their own terms is a human right
I’m sure the 10 spectators will be upset
Not good enough! All religions teach acceptance of others. You don't pick and choose.
Watch the losers lie and blow it out of proportion. She is supportive and inclusive with her team mates. She does show them understanding. She does not do half the things people accuse her of, simply won't wear a jumper when for her, garments are individual identifiers
Of course they do. People understand that its not black and white, its not homophobia OR 110% support in all ways. People realise we can want the lgbtqi+ community to have rights, support, kindness and understanding, without turning our backs on our own beliefs and values.
LGBTIQ is the real cult in Australia. You are sinful if you don’t glorify them.
How can she not want to support equality? 🤔
I’m old enough to remember the Australian cricket team putting away alcohol to include Khawaja
So a woman playing a sport other women fought for decades for the right to play snubs people who face exclusion and discrimination? She's also happy to wear the required uniform - what about religious dress rules? Doesn't pass the consistency test.
I recall Michael Jones of the AllBlacks in the 80s, never played rugby on Sunday due to religious reasons. And the team and fans understood that.
What “understanding” would apply if a Christian player withdrew from a match on the same grounds?
Why is the the LGBT agenda being shoved down our throats at every platform. No player should be forced to wear or support anything if they don't want to, keep this about sports and sports only
Let’s hope the club makes the badge permanent.
Good on her! No different to players refusing alcohol or other items banners!
“Hey Mum, I’m gay.” “Yeah nah, bub. It’s against our religion so, no you’re not.” “Oh. Ok. Glad that’s sorted then. I was feeling suicidal about it. Glad I don’t have to worry now.” *dumps jumper in the bin*
Having to wear a particular jersey in support of management's desire to make a sport seem inclusive of a particular mindset is both offensive and wrong.
Pride in sport, a place for everyone, just not the ones we don't like. I'm fine with her wrong views, her opinion is irrelevant to me as long as she's not using it to do harm/incite. As a team player in a team sport, I think she has made the only decision that is acceptable.
Religion, the great divider of people.
religion should NEVER trump human rights. And the way this article tries so hard not to be negative about this is seriously disturbing.
Everyone should have freedom to be respectful towards their religion. You choose to support something because you believe in something and same way they believe in something so we are no one to become judge Judy here
She makes her choice, what’s behind it ? There’s a silent yes discrimination against gay Islamic brothers and sisters , observed this first hand and was shocked not surprised way it works, , silently banned was my school mate and others , hatred , etc more than u see
Be empathetic to us! We still believe we haven't done anything wrong choosing regional Australia as our home. Please be compassionate and grant our 489 visa. It's been more than 2.5 years we around 5,500 people are in extreme pain without any reason! Grant489ProvisionalVisa
Well done Haneen, you or anyone should not be compelled and blindly follow issues you morally object to.. Keep up the good work...
Why there is a need for LGBTIQ TO BE DESIGNED IN SPORTS UNIFORM anyway? Tired of this campaigns incorporated in sports...Well she has the right to refuse....
This would blow a wokes mind trying to work out who is the canceled party. 🍿 🍿 🍿
What are the religious reasons? Intolerance and bigotry? Are her teammates supporting this CALL IT FOR WHAT IT IS
As a Muslim its ok to be bigoted. Shes the lsst person that should show bigotry. Tolerance begets tolerance
Wgaf
I demand the right to discriminate based on the magical sky fairy I believe in. 🤦🏻♂️
Best sit out for good then.
Extrapolated from the Principle she is standing by, then on religious or personal preference beliefs anyone has the right to discriminate towards her religion, their beliefs & practices or is discrimination a one way street.
Some real islamaphobic comments in this section. We have a real long way to come as a country
Accept and respect my cultural background and beliefs even if I disrespect you epicfail ShameOnYou religiousbigotry What if they had Muslim round and players decided to sit out because their values didn’t align with the religion. There would be hell to pay!
And as for political statements in sport? What if you believe in screwing sheep? Then what ?
As a gay person i have no problem if she wants to sit out the same as i would if it was for a religious game
Is she saying that although racial intolerance is bad , sexual intolerance is acceptable ? What a sad moment coming from someone that should know all about the devastating effects of bigotry and intolerance
I don’t understand this. How can a person not want to live in world that INCLUDES minorities/ people of diverse sexual orientation/ etc. why
Must make her queer teammates feel so good to play with someone who rates her made up fairy story over their right to be treated with respect
What part of supporting other human beings rights is anti your religion? fuckreligion
Wonder what this would would be like if there was no religion?
You could of asked the two Muzlim players in the AFL for their Opinion years ago and got a very direct answer but no people are too afraid to ask the hard questions in this country
I want inclusion but I am not for inclusion 🤔
I don't understand why no one is calling out the AFLW for profiting off Muslim players while being blatantly Islamophobic. IF the AFLW really cared about its players, it would ALSO have a Traditional Muslim garb round where all the AFLW players celebrated the Muslim culture.
Is this her belief or her Religion forcing her to do this?
Stop forcing agendas on people ... now this poor woman feels segregated and ostracised
Disturbing to see large groups of people in western sydney backing in religious bigotry.
Why not just give her a standard jersey? Bit like when Usman Khawaja didn’t want to wear a one day shirt with a VB logo they gave him one without
LOL at social justice warriors' cognitive dissonance!
