Addiction and mental health concerns rise for people in tower lockdown

Residents in Melbourne's public housing towers under lockdown are worried about a lack of access to medication, mental health and addiction services. There are fears people are going into withdrawal from addictive substances which could lead to an increase in family violence

Muhammed is also becoming increasingly worried about his family who live in a tower in North Melbourne. That task has fallen to his sister who has been on the phone for almost two days making sure someone can deliver the medication.Community leader Nor Shanino said many young people in the towers were struggling with mental health issues."He's on medication and I yelled out his name and thank god he recognised me and stopped," Mr Shanino said.

"At this stage, we know some people who use drugs and substances and have been locked away and will go into withdrawal which could spark domestic violence," he said.

The WHOLE COUNTRY was in lockdown just a few months ago....

Funny how Pauline Hanson was actually right... not acknowledged though. auspol

How does Muhammad have a 2/3 bedroom flat on his own? There are tens of thousands of families waiting for public housing.

what they did with towers without warning is dreadful. in any case the whole city needs to be locked down. if i was in there i'd do a michael scofield.

'He said there were many people in all the towers that struggled with addiction' Isn't that what Pauline Hanson said?

Yes this is the third wave Not only in the towers but everywhere in Australia.

'addiction services'? Wasn't there some mention of that yesterday? Pauline someone?

No one said anything about the mental health of our elderly who were locked down for well over a month ... I appreciate it’s tough but the media need to stop - their needs are being accounted for as best can be

Another step closer for the government to demolish existing buildings and developing prime land - they need public on their side, this is how you do it

Death would be worse Corona virus is deadly Stay inside Stay calm Ask for help Worldwide pandemic Unprecedented responses Doing their best

Having read the comments here, I am disturbed how little empathy is around. 6 months ago: drones and police patrolling the street, full lockdown etc. would have been only in a nightmare now people think normal and even cheer FOR it. Weak people are easy to manipulate with fear.

Maybe they need hobbies

Think about those in long term detention first

but but.. I thought Pauline was just racist.. doesn't this mean she was right about the people in the towers?

3 days into a 5 day lock down and the media wants to raise concerns people are going crazy with anxiety. Well let’s forget the whole thing didn’t happen, and carry on as normal. Then the media will find real cause for alarm.

Vic Government should and must do better ,the way they plan force to order people for lock down, In same manner let them feel they are part of system not a the very bottom of it ,the way now ,prove and improve there is still time to prove other wise . Vic Gov act please.

Just like Pauline said.

The media a playing to the lefties, yes it is hard, but safety is paramount, 1 person could infect 2 people then 4 then it is out of control. If that was to have happened this would be a out cry the other why did they not lock them down it's a catch 22moment.

How can a State government adequately prepare for a sudden hard lockdown? There have been problems. That’s an unfortunate situation. But hopefully those problems will be rectified quickly. No other Premier would have been better at handling this.

But need my smack bro!

So Pauline Hanson was right again .

The ABC should be condemned for suggesting that these towers are full of drug addicts, alcoholics and non-english speakers.

They’ve been “locked” up 3 days !! Cmon ! Deal with it . You would be complaining if nothing was getting done to help them !

It’s only been a hot 2 days , a bit of extreme reporting from the Age. Seems they are only interested in dividing and not bringing people together.

These peasants can't handle 5 days in their own junkie flat, soft.

Enough.

Think of the 2weeks in a hotel compared to 5days in yr own home?

This is turning into a humanitarian disaster

It’s 5 DAYS!! Calm down!

I cannot believe how intense the media is about a 5 day lockdown. It proves that even the ABC only ever looks for angles to keep creating its own narrative. If only this level of focus was given to refugees locked up in detention. For years.

If we can’t treat them like human beings we should never have allowed them into Australia in the first place.

Drug addicts in total lockdown, this is going to get interesting. Do they get sedated or arrested. The one that bit the police officer obviously wasn't on drugs. Lets see if it's dealt with as a health crisis or a war on drug users.
