The competition watchdog has given the green light to a $600 million deal that would see China Mengniu Dairy acquire Lion's dairy and drinks business

The regulatory tick by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission means that the fast-growing Chinese dairy giant will continue expanding and improving its capability to service growing Asian markets.

A key consideration of the ACCC was the potential impact of the deal on competition for the purchase of raw milk from dairy farmers in Gippsland, Victoria.Lion owns dairy processing facilities at Morwell in Gippsland and Chelsea in suburban Melbourne. Mengniu through a subsidiary has an indirect interest in the dairy processor Burra Foods, which has a dairy facility at Korumburra in South Gippsland.

The proposed Mengniu/Lion deal was announced in November, shortly after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg gave conditional approval to Mengniu to buy Australian infant formula company Bellamy's Organic in a $1.5 billion deal.

No. The government needs to stop this. The onl5 trouble is that we have no 9ne to contest this pathetic government at the next election

surely there can't be too much left that China doesn't own

Oh and I forgot Cubby station and it's water allocation.

🤮

Yep Pacific Brand and chesty bond Ugg boots drisabone, vegemite, arnott's biscuits. Heinz sell it all. Holden. good bye Goo boo

Shan't be buying any Chinese owned milk.

Shameful

🤬

Low AUD = cheap assets for OS investors.

Australia has totally sold out to the Chinese, Australia has no food, water, ports, resources, Security whats so ever what a disgrace

No more dairy farmers for me, this is appalling. 😡

Don't forget this was owned by a Japanese beverage company

We have a ACCC?

So they get voted in by the people & then completely ignore what they want for our country. STOP selling of our land, resources, companies etc to foreign interests

Thank God I don’t drink milk

Will Australia be short of milk in the future because the manufacturers are sending our milk overseas and we have to buy it back. The Federal Government should stop the sale ASAP.

Honestly..so the govt just let's them! As I said yesterday..the Chinese invasion has started..soon they will send troops to protect what they bought!...It will happen !

Don't buy their products then, I'm not going to once they take over, couldn't trust these people, remember the melamine tragedy, that's how their minds work. What ever happened to Australia Made and Produced products, that's a laugh, a sick joke.

Protests will change nothing. Protests only work when someone in power will listen.

This is a really bad decision. China will control the majority of milk in Australia as well as the pricing to our farmers.

Omfg

Ah well, another series of products to add to the naughty list.

So sad

You got to love how dumb people are - Hey the cows the milk comes from live in Australia, the 550 dairy farmers that own the cows live in Australia. The company is already owned by France and Japan. This allows Australian farmers to beat the Aus supermarkets and find new markets

So like, you guys know that the Japanese currently own dairy farmers? 🤦🏼‍♂️

To save time, just put a price on the country of Australia. Isn't anything safe from them ?

acccgovau Australian subservience knows no bounds

And so the Baby Boomers sell off of Australian assets continues - anything to keep those super funds topped up.

No way. This is treachery!

One more nail into the coffin for ScottMorrisonMP & JoshFrydenberg we are sick of everything being sold to China auspol ausbiz

NO NO NO this is so wrong. We are selling our country out and it has to STOP

Australia selling water rights to Canadians and important food sources to authoritarian China regime. Watchdog useless, just care for its portion of the cake $$. Next generation will become dependent on Chinese. auspol

Why? Instead of buy out, how bout rent out? Ugh! If we keep this up, all we'll have to own is bushfires and cyclones. And no one wants to buy those out... *shakes head*

Once again our Govt is anti China. But when it comes to dollars they straight away approve sale of land/business to China based business. I don’t blame China or anything. But our politicians/Gvt . Either don’t sell anything or approve sales to China or just shut up.

Pretty soon we will be drinking powdered milk bc all our milk is being made into UHT and sent to China

Name 1 chinese borne company that was bought out by an offshore non-chinese party.. china has a long term plan, Australia looks at what it can get today.

what 'competition' and what 'watchdog'?

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO !!!! Time we Australians rose up and protested vociferously at the selling off of our businesses, our resources. When will our food security become a matter of concern for our useless Govt

buylocal

FFS Why.

We need to look after our food security, not that of other nations

So now it will all go to China

Why? China does not have a good history with contamination of milk products

Just another chapter in the slow but sure takeover of Australia by Communist China. Shame on our Politicians and Press: You have sold us out; you pathetic lot.

Major Aussie brand adds to wage ‘epidemic’Yet another major institution has added to the underpayment scandal plaguing corporate Australia, as the government threatens tougher penalties. News are really scraping the bottom of the barrel in journalistic talent. These corporations do not set out to underpay workers. Example is Woolworths changed there payroll system and moved it to Queensland. When they realised the errors they made good. Print that morons!
