Australia and New Zealand are closer to opening their borders to one another after New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern met with Australia's national cabinet to discuss the possibility.was ongoing, Ms Ardern said the so-called trans-Tasman bubble would be agreed to only if New Zealand was assured no cases would be transmitted from Australia.Ms Ardern added that if travel was agreed to, neither country would require quarantine periods for visitors.
Ms Ardern remained tight-lipped in follow up questions from reporters, saying there would be "a lot of work" to be done before the countries could create a trans-Tasman bubble. There have been 1,137 confirmed coronavirus cases and 349 probable cases in New Zealand, with 20 deaths. Four New Zealanders are in hospital with the virus and 1,302 patients have recovered.
"If we were seeing a cluster of cases, or growth in cases or outbreaks, we would have to look at changing what we were doing and receiving on our side," she said.Ms Ardern said the national cabinet would release a statement this afternoon that would detail what was discussed.
Last week, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said while international travel from Australia was a long way off, an exception could be made for New Zealand if both countries continued to flatten the coronavirus curve. "I can't see international travel occurring anytime soon," Mr Morrison said. "The only exception to that... is potentially with New Zealand, and we have had some good discussions about that."Get our Coronavirus Update newsletter for the day's crucial developments at a glance, the numbers you need to know and what our readers are saying.
