Analysis: A lost decade and a lame decade - but is Sydney finally making a comeback?

Gabriel Metcalf, the Committee for Sydney's recent recruit from San Francisco, spent much of his first year in the job listening to people complain about their own city.

The Committee for Sydney's Gabriel Metcalf:"So many people told me how after the Olympics, Sydney took a break."This notion that Sydney squandered its post-Olympics glory - by failing to invest in transport, culture and amenity - is widely accepted. In a blistering editorial in 2006, thelamented former Labor premier Bob Carr had left NSW as "the sad state" and Australia's "biggest loser".

Quiet: Kings Cross was hit particularly hard by the lockout laws, with foot traffic down and venues closing.Meanwhile, Melbourne was ascendant. It was growing faster, and is already bigger than Sydney depending on how you slice the population stats. Its premier Daniel Andrews mocked Sydney's struggles, marketing his town as a place where you can do what you want, when you want. AFL thrived while NRL faltered.

Probay not given the wowsers and dinosaurs that run NSW

Not with the current levels of immigration.

Picture pretty much sums it up. Sydney died after the Olympics and that XPT is a sorry excuse for a fast train. We are behind or have been left behind the rest of the world. Whole system is broken.

Haha! Not under the Liberal Party! The party of do nothing except crime!

All damage resting on the shoulders of that weedy nerd Bob “ I hate sport and only admire intellectuals “ Carr.

ONLY in Sydney is this fart bubble question even let out. Literally NO ONE anywhere outside the 2**** postcode range gives a flying **** about what f****** Sydney is making - whether it's a 'comeback,' (sic) or a total obsessional tit of itself. parochia

How I'd improve Sydney: We need to think of ourselves as united, not dividedComment: There is an inherent competitiveness to our city and our personality which has created an east versus west mentality Great. How about fairfax locates some journalists out here in the west to write articles about what's going on out here? You might even increase your readership Sydney is different from Melbourne or most cities as no other city is built on a stunning harbour with gorgeous beaches north and south. Of course this creates divides. You’re overthinking it.
