Jean-Pierre Thebault leaves Canberra offering a scathing analysis of Australia's diplomacy in recent days, describing the decision to scrap the government's $90 billion submarine contract as a 'huge mistake'.

Senior French officials have accused Australia of deliberately keeping the country in the dark before announcing it would procure nuclear-powered submarines from the US and the UK, criticising a "breach of confidence".

When referencing the negotiations France's European Affairs Minister, Clément Beaune, told broadcaster France 24: "I don't see how we can trust our Australian partners." "It's unclear what extent Paris speaks for Europe on this issue, there are the economic self-interests of 26 other members states to take on board here," Mr Lemahieu told the ABC.

A spokesman for Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne said Australia regrets the recall of Mr Thebault, which was an incredibly rare diplomatic step between allies.

Nothing serious to worry about, a Political Spat that will achieve nothing. Shows that the French Government is avoiding the truth here.

The French leaked the design of the sub in a security breach to Chinese and others. They also almost doubled the cost since the signing of the contract for the next building faze. The French boats won't be delivered any earlier than the UK/US boats and they won't be any cheaper.

Pathetic its not about France its about Australia, seems the friendship was conditional, lets buy some French subs too and keep them happy 🐸

ScottyTheAnnouncer chucks a tantrum and tries to deflect criticism from his inept and incompetent government. Nothing more nothing less but to ‘appeal’ to his ever decreasing base.

Regional security over French economy 🤔

How is Aust going to explain it when France sanctions us

Please. Anyone remotely interested in military affairs could tell the project was in trouble, and the US subs were a better option in the first place.

Has France also severed ties with UK and US?

Hypocrite: to say Australia cannot be trusted when during World War 11 French police collaborated with the Germans, rounded up THEIR OWN citizens for the German Nazi SS to use for sex and exterminate now called ethnic cleansing.racism inequality libertyfarce auspol submarine

Who ordered Code Red

Dear French Ambassador Jean-Pierre Thebault, I am very sorry for you having to take the actions you did, that were a result of recent events, of which you were not responsible.

au revoir et merci d'être venu

Good bye , we will come and help bail you out when the next war starts and France needs to be saved again

So. Did Scott Morison liaise with France before giving them the flick? Surely he would've. Didn't he?

France needs a reminder of all the young Australians & Americans who died saving their country in two world wars before they go storming off in immature tantrums!

Aussies seem to have no shame

Well, if they've got les shits because we called curtains on their overdue, over-cost, Peugeot-standard boats, then they can tell us not to make 'champagne' or 'brie' and go nuke a few Pacific attolls.

Ironic & sad that the last time the French Ambassador was recalled from Straya was when a French bid for a defence contract was ignored. Well done 🥔 & lyingcow for another expensive fuckup

clumsy and inadequate is as Australian as the Liberal National Party get

Au revoir

Naval Group didn’t keep its customer happy. Petulance won’t fix it now, but the French ambassador won’t mind swapping the lockdown in Canberra for Paris.

Hey! That's out of line! Kowtowing to the wants of the US and UK is very much Australian.

If it wasn’t for Aussie soldiers sacrificing their lives in not one but TWO World Wars these cheese eating surrender monkeys would be speaking German today.

How many Aussie soldiers died on French soil? We paid our debt well and truly to them, our govt definitely made a foolish decision and yes treated them poorly but please the French need to get over it.

Macron basicly told us to shut up when we asked for an inquiry into COVID-19 guessing the embarrassment of being partners in the Wuhan lab wasn't important

France and Aus fought side-by-side in the two biggest wars in human history. Even if the subs contract had major issues, this is not the way to go about breaking up a strategic partnership. The disgusting arrogance from Morrison and shameful treatment of an ally may haunt us yet.

Well deserved critiscism of a PM defence minister & foreign minister who have a combined IQ of 10 & no sense of diplomatic etiquette.

For fck sake abc!! We don't need to know how france, china or any other fcking country in the world feels about us getting nuclear subs or anything else!! Stop chasing drama and stick to what's important to Australian's now!!!!

But he just drove around the block right? Where can he go?

French Ambassador departs Canberra over submarine spat. France should wake up to the fact that French owned Naval Group botched the contract. This led up to Australia looking elsewhere to get submarines. Australia has been duded before by French military contracts.

It was a contract we should of never got involved with. Who would sign up for a sub of a totally new untested design and then change it from nuclear to diesel and its price had gone from 50 to 90 billion. I assume that is why the grey ghost Malcolm Turnbull hasn't complained.

Clumsy and un-Australian describes the Morrison regime perfectly….

Clumsy and Inadequate. A good description of the French handling of the submarine contract, which was plagued with constant delays, obstructions, security concerns and cost blowouts. Already blown out to almost double the budget, at least 5 years behind schedule.

We'll buy your islands & assets in Pacific for $90B in gold bullion. Oui! You won't have to waste money to come around the world to defend those tiny islands any more. You'll have more 'strategic autonomy' and resources to protect EU members from Turkey and Russia.👍

Anglos pissing off the French again!

The Crapauds.... Over losing the Submarine contract. Thanks to BernardCornwell for the reference.

The only thing in Australian is this article.

Tell your bosses, 'we couldn't protect EU member states Greece and Cyprus when Turkey bullied them over territorial waters, how could we reassure Australia that our partnership in Indo-Pacific is worth a franc?'

Nuclear distraction - another dud announcement from team squirmo. The doomsday clock clicks over another notch.

The French didn't give a damn about Australia's protests about them testing their nuclear bombs off our coast. The murder of the 2 Rainbow Warrior staff in NZ also not a high point of relations.

Remember that they nuked the south pacific

lnp have unintentionally handed alp, if elected, a once in a generation opportunity to rebuild Australian Foreign policy and irrevocably redirect Defence policy. auspol ausdef .SenatorWong AdamBandt Senator_Patrick politicsabc MrKRudd

Yep we know!😤🤬

Surely the French have to be embarrassed. 10 years over due and nothing delivered. In fact there should have been a clause that automatically terminated the contract. The French have very short memories !!

French ambassador to Australia seen at residence.

It’s not up to up to people from overseas territories to tell us what is and what isn’t ‘Australian’. What is Australian is the protection of Australians. Hope France has learnt their lesson. Next time, make it a contract.

Australia ‘regrets’ French ambassador recall but makes no apology for new subs dealThe federal government has hit back at criticism from France over the decision to tear up a contract to buy 12 French submarines, defending the move as in Australia’s “clear and communicated national security interests”. | James Massola, Bevan Shields ... What, communicated as clearly and with as many lies as that lot uses to communicate with its own constituency? ScottMorrisonMP prove it, as France also has nuclear submarines and the technology so it’s just a matter of changing the propulsion from diesel to nuclear that could have been done under the current contract with France. What else are you not telling Australia come clean!!

'A stab in the back': French anger with Australia over cancelled submarine dealFrance's Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian lashes out at Australia's decision to cancel a $90 billion submarine deal, saying that 'trust has been broken'. Every 6 months the French were over budget, & then asking for a further 2 year extension. Sure . Viva La France ! What are they complaining about? The French were not fulfilling their side of the deal. Australia is perfectly justified in cancelling. Interesting that the party that can’t deliver the promised product unless the party buying it settles for it being late and much more expensive than agreed is the one acting all hurty feels and talking about a betrayal.
