A look back at the achievements of San Antonio's top four boxers, Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez, Mario Barrios, Ramon Cardenas and Floyd Schofield, in 2024. The group combined for seven wins and one draw in eight bouts, with Rodriguez and Barrios winning world championships. 2025 holds exciting prospects for the Fab Four.
They’re part of arguably the best class of fighters this city has ever produced, one a prodigy, another a world champion in his prime. In all, Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez, Mario Barrios, Ramon Cardenas and Floyd Schofield have a combined career record of 93-3-1 with 58 knockouts and are coming off a banner year in 2024 that saw them post seven wins and a draw in eight total bouts, marred only by a controversial draw as part of a controversial card at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
Rodriguez and Barrios won world championships, while Cardenas and Schofield punched their way into contention. Here’s a look back at what San Antonio’s Fab Four accomplished in 2024 and what looms ahead in 2025: Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez Age: 24 Division: Super flyweight Record: 21-0, 14 KOs Major titles: WBC super flyweight 2024 results: KO-7 win over Juan Francisco Estrada; TKO-3 over Pedro Guevara Next up: Showdown against Nicaraguan legend Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez or unification bout with another 115-pound champion. Comment: Ever since he burst on the world scene in 2022 as boxing’s youngest champion, “Bam” has been on a meteoric rise to fame. Capped by his domination of Estrada, Bam has beaten most of the biggest names in the flyweight and super flyweight divisions and is now considered one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best, regardless of weight class. The big question now is, will his next fight be in San Antonio? Mario Barrios Age: 29 Division: Welterweight Record: 29-2-1, 18 KOs Major titles: WBC welterweight 2024 results: UD-12 over Fabian Maidana; split draw against Abel Ramos Next up: TBD. Possibilities include Conor Benn, the son of former two-division world champion Nigel Benn of Great Britain. Currently ranked No. 2 by the WBC and WBA, Conor Benn has called out Barrios on social media. Other names being mentioned include Manny Pacquiao and IBF champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis. Comment: Most observers thought Barrios beat Ramos in narrow decision on Mike Tyson-Jake Paul undercard. But at least Barrios was able to retrain his WBC 147-pound belt despite the draw. Now that he has a major title, Barrios will have no shortage of possible opponents in 2025. He’s in his prime now and is looking forward to a big year. Ramon Cardenas Age: 29 Division: Super bantamweight Record: 25-1, 14 KOs Major titles: None 2024 results: TKO-6 over Israel Rodriguez Picazo; KO-9 over Jesus Ramirez Rubio Next up: Bryan Acosta on Feb. 8 at Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio Comment: Ended year on a roll with 13 straight wins, seven by knockout and ranked No. 2 in the world by the WBA. Opened some eyes with one-punch TKO of Picazo, breaking his jaw in the process. Then in his next fight against Rubio, Cardenas fought the last three or four rounds with a broken bone in his right hand and still managed to win by knockout with a left hook to the liver in the ninth. The hope is a convincing win vs. Acosta in February will earn Cardenas a title shot later in the year. Floyd Schofield Age: 22 Division: Lightweight Record: 18-0, 12 KOs Major titles: None 2024 results: DQ-5 vs. Esteuri Suero; UD-12 over Rene Tellez Giron Next up: Ranked No. 2 in the world by the WBA, Schofield fights WBC lightweight champ Shakur Stevenson on Feb. 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Comment: Signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, who saw in Schofield, a New Jersey native now living in San Antonio, a talented but somewhat raw prospect who needs a little more seasoning before hitting the big time. But that was before Matchroom Promotions out of Great Britain came along and made Team Schofield an offer it couldn’t refuse, and the fight with Stevenson was made. It figures to be a great matchup. San Antonio could be adding another name to its list of champions.
